Standing tall at approximately 7,120 feet (2,170 meters) above sea level, Kolukkumalai Peak is a captivating destination located about 32 kilometers (20 miles) from Munnar. This hilltop village, while situated in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, is uniquely accessible only via a challenging jeep ride of up to 17 kilometers through rugged and rain-drenched roads that begin near Munnar in the Idukki district of Kerala. In fact, the sole route to peak currently starts in Kerala, approximately 32 kilometers away from Munnar.
Reaching Kolukkumalai Peak is an adventure in itself, as it is only accessible by jeeps due to the challenging terrain. Walking directly up this route is not permitted. Jeeps are available from the town of Suryanelli, and the scenic two-hour journey will take you to the trek’s drop-off point. From there, the final trek to Kolukkumalai Peak is about 1.5 km and is considered easy for most, though it can be tricky during the monsoon season due to slippery conditions and strong winds.
The experience of trekking to Kolukkumalai Peak before sunrise, while it’s still dark, is undeniably difficult. However, the reward is immense when you arrive at the summit and witness a breathtakingly beautiful sunrise.
Upon arriving in Suryanelli, specifically at the Upper Suryanelli Estate, which acts as the basecamp for your ascent to Kolukkumalai Peak, you’ll need to hire a jeep for the journey to the drop-off point.
Beyond the exhilarating jeep ride and the rewarding trek, Kolukkumalai is renowned for housing some of the highest tea plantations in the world. Visitors can often witness the traditional methods of tea processing in the estates, adding a unique cultural and historical dimension to their visit. The aroma of fresh tea leaves and the stunning views of the verdant slopes create an unforgettable sensory experience at Kolukkumalai Peak.
