Beneath clouds like cotton, the mystical, dreamy valley of Ilaveezhapoonchira is one of the finest picnic destinations in the Kottayam district. This dreamland valley spreads over thousands of acres. It is more than just another location; it is a journey that defies time and space.
Ilaveezhapoonchira is located about 55 km from Kottayam and 20 km from Thodupuzha. Green hillocks stand sentinel for the valley, peaking at about 3,200 feet above sea level. Mankunnu, Kodayathoormala, and Thonippara are the three hillocks that define the view. Visitors widely accept this as the best spot to view the most enchanting sunrise and sunset in the region.
The name Ilaveezhapoonchira translates literally to ‘pond of flowers where leaves do not wither or fall.’ Local myths tell a fascinating story. During their 12-year exile, the Pandavas stopped here. Their wife, Draupadi, bathed in a nearby pond. Her divine beauty enchanted the devas (supernatural beings). They yielded to their voyeuristic desires. This sight enraged King Indra of the devas. He created hillocks surrounded by flowers to prevent the devas from glimpsing her.
Since no trees surrounded the pond, it remained leafless, thus earning the name Ilaveezhapoonchira. Monsoons spin their magic spell here each year. They rejuvenate the mythical pond and color the hills into a surreal vision. The Kannadipara (Rock Mirror) is the highest point in the Ilaveezhapoonchira Range. This rocky valley beautifully reflects the sun. Illikkal Kallu, one of the state’s finest viewpoints, lies close to Ilaveezhapoonchira.
The peak of Ilaveezhapoonchira is one of the state’s most desired trekking spots. From the summit, you can view an array of six districts. You also see the Malankara reservoir extending across the rugged valleys. Don’t miss the Kazhukankulimali Waterfalls, with its colorful cascades. The thrilling walk takes you across nature at its best. This trek will help you make memories that last a lifetime. The handsome landscape makes it an ideal trekker’s paradise. Always ensure you carry plenty of water and snacks when trekking.
Veiled from city life’s madness, this haven of peace nestles in nature’s green hug. It beckons fatigued hearts to step into the transcendent beauty of unspoiled Kerala landscapes. The air is fresh with the scent of wildflowers. The harmony of birdsong adds charm to this piece of paradise. A deep feeling of peace permeates every nook of Ilaveezhapoonchira. Do make a visit for a truly refreshing vacation.
