Paithalmala, a hidden gem in Kannur, sits high in the Western Ghats of Kerala as the tallest peak in the district at around 4,500 feet above sea level. Close to the Kerala–Karnataka border, this peaceful hill station attracts nature lovers and trekkers looking for a calm escape. The 6 km trek to the top passes through dense forest paths and open grasslands, eventually leading to an observatory tower with sweeping views of the valleys and distant hills.
The region around Paithalmala holds rich biodiversity with more than 100 butterfly species, several unique birds, and rare plants. The cool, mist-filled climate adds to the charm, offering both tranquility and adventure in a single trip. The ideal time to visit is from January to March since the monsoon season makes the trekking trails slippery. Although the trek is moderately easy, sturdy footwear and basic essentials like water and snacks make the journey more comfortable.
About 45 minutes into the trek, you reach an observatory tower that gives a stunning vantage point of the landscape. With its untouched beauty and peaceful surroundings, Paithalmala remains one of Kerala’s most serene natural retreats.
